Ryan Van Wagenen served a two year philanthropic church mission in North Carolina from June 2005-2007. During this time he lived in the eastern half of the state. The areas he served in included Rocky Mount, Hampstead, Rockingham, Raleigh, Apex, and Southport. Ryan has some great memories during this time and especially loved the people out there. North Carolina has some of the nicest people in the country. He also felt that many were also extremely generous with their time and resources - Most nights a church member or a local citizen in the town would have Ryan and other missionaries over for dinner and often even come with them after to help in service and teaching lessons to those that wanted to learn more about the gospel of Jesus Christ.
It was an amazing experience for Ryan to spend two years at a prime time in his life (19-21 years old) and focus as much as possible on others and philanthropy. There are not many opportunities in life to have a long period of time like that and attempt to live so selflessly. Ryan will forever be grateful for this time and for all the kind people and friends he met in the great state of North Carolina.
